Journeyman Distillery,
With founders:
Bill and Johanna Welter
In June 2021, I traveled to Journeyman Distillery located in Three Oaks, Michigan in the southwest corner of our state. I stood in awe of this mammoth size century old factory that has been renovated into a stunning distillery, restaurant, wedding venue, and so much more. The building was originally the historic EK Warren’s Corset & Buggy Whip business in 1883, and I couldn’t wait to learn about the transformation and the journey it took to create Journeyman Distillery.
An unexpected schedule change for the podcast date & time presented the most gracious invite and opportunity to join the founders at an event at Journeyman. The Corsets, Whips & Whiskey event was a 5-course dinner and an introduction to their latest whiskey; it was an absolute amazing night!
Journeyman Distillery founders Bill and Johanna Welter welcome their guest in like family and their hospitality was over the top. Bill and his staff presented what each course was, how it was prepared and the cocktail that best complimented it. To pick one favorite from the evening would be impossible, each course and drink were both simple and complex and offered flavor and an exceptional dining experience.
The time came to reveal their latest whiskey and we gathered around to toast the hosts and the staff for the exceptional evening. And the whiskey? Corsets, Whips & Whiskey is 100% Wheat Whiskey Cask Strength, a light fruity nose, warm layers of sweetness like citrus and caramel and it lingers in your mouth and gives a slight warm burn afterwards. This is a limited release and already earning awards, so don’t wait to try it!
After the event, my friend Ann Daily (who came with me), and I had the pleasure to have a private tour by Bill’s father Chuck Welter. He was beaming with pride as we toured the distillery and he explained how Bill and Johanna created and built this business to what it is today.
Starting small with one distillery, to adding a full restaurant, wedding venue, store, a second distillery…and a beautiful 5-bedroom flat… in 10 short years, Bill and Johanna now with young family and a business that is highly recognized in Whiskey Advocate and many other magazines as one of the top kosher distillers with award winning spirits.
Growing grain to glass is one hurdle, growing your crops or obtaining your product that is certified organic & kosher is a much higher standard.
Please listen in to hear their story, we had a few technical problems, but you can still hear their story and their plans to grow.
To learn more about their products, events and hours go to Journeyman Distillery.
Cheers!
